1.2 Convection Currents and The Mantle

Vocabulary:

Heat Transfer-movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object
Radiation-energy transfer through empty space
Convection-heat transfer by movement of a heated fluid
Conduction-heat transfer by direct contact of matter
Density-how much mass in a volume of a substance
Convection Current-flow which transfers heat within a fluid

Outline

  • Convection currents and the Mantle

    • Radiation

      • The transfer of energy through empty space is called radiation.Sunlight is radiation that warms Earth's surface.Heat transfer by radiation takes place with no direct contact between a heat source and an object.Forms of radiation include the heat you feel around a flame or an open fire.
    • Conduction

      • Heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter is called conduction.
    • -Convection

      • Convection is heat transfer by the the movement of a heated fluid.During convection heated particles of a fluid begin to flow, transfering heat energy from one part of the fluid to another.Heat transfer through convection is caused by differences of temperature and density within a fluid.
    • -Convection in Earth's Mantle

      • The heat source for the convection currents in the asthnosphere is heat from Earth's core and from the mantle itself.
